No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
